Transparencies
A record release by Research and Waves with Nicolás Rosero and Carlos Pablo Villamizar
Featuring work by a group of 7 international artists, poets, scientists and designers, the record offers a look at the concept of Transparency from a variety of cultural, creative and scientific perspectives. In conversation with our curatorial team, 6 of the contributors synthesised their interpretation of the theme within a 5 minute long audio piece, many of them working with the medium for the first time. The front and back cover of the album are designed by graphic designer and digital artist Galina Kruzhilina, creating a visual response to the 6 sound pieces.
Research and Waves' curatorial goals aim to foster new connections between both, our contributors, as well as the subject matters of their work, and we approached this project not only as an exhibition or media release, but a joined research effort that illuminates the concept of Transparency in a way that is networked, trans-disciplinary and relevant to today's shared, cultural and social experience. We selected participants based on the conversations their practice engages in, and the works featured on the release touch on aspects of Transparency related to human intimacy (Jasmina Al-Qaisi), financial trading and pseudo-science (Sam Conran), the material qualities of the everyday (Patrick Cruz), neuroscience and artificial intelligence (Nicolas Gravel), digital surveillance (Galina Kruzhilina), communication and collectivity (Louise Vind Nielsen), colonial histories and public space (Fritz Laszlo Weber). The tracks on the record range from electronic and acoustic compositions, field recordings and spoken word performances to audio narratives.
For the final release of the record we held a weekend-long event at project space Feldfünf in Berlin that not only gave our audience the opportunity to listen to the finished record for the first time, but also featured a program of performances, installations, lectures, artworks and workshops by our contributors that elaborated on and further contextualized the work and themes on the record.

Transparencies: Prelude 1
w/ Nicolas Rosero & Carlos Pablo Villamizar
"Transparent entities can appear deceitful and often raise suspicion, as their inherent nature is one of contradiction (or duality), evasive, but also obvious. Take the lightwaves that, once emitted, travel straight through space until they hit an obstacle and are forced to change their path in a moment of reflection. Only if their new trajectory will lead them right into our eyes, the reflector, and indirectly the waves themselves, become visible. Transparency takes place where there is minimal reflection, where waves range freely, with little to no barriers."
Research and Waves presents the first of two Prelude Events for our upcoming record release Transparencies at Galerie Mitte in Bremen. We will introduce the concept for our first group exhibition on vinyl, announce the participating artists and researchers and the audience will get the chance to hear the audio contributions for the very first time.
With the aim to let our own process become transparent, we will also showcase our curatorial work in progress: Each member of the curatorial team (Research and Waves + Nicolas Rosero and Carlos Pablo Villamizar) will bring objects of insight, inspiration and motivation around the theme of Transparency into the event space, where they will be arranged on a 2 dimensional grid as part of a time-based presentation format. This physical mapping of our topic creates a space that the audience, contributing artists as well as ourselves can observe, reflect on and draw new connections from. These findings will be further discussed and analysed in a second Prelude event at project space Feldfuenf in Berlin in January.
The Prelude Events are experiments disguised as cultural events. Their results will become part of a two-day record release event for Transparencies that will take place at Feldfuenf in Berlin at the end of April 2019. On this occasion we will present the physical record for the first time and each contributor to the record will develop a format to bring their position into the physical space of Feldfuenf.
