by Lucas Odahara with Luiz Monteiro
A record release by Research and Waves
Cover (Something Newly Missing) by Lucas Odahara with music by Lucas' father Luiz Monteiro is a sonic exhibition catalog.
The release coincided with the exhibition "Read Before the Fire", where Odahara developed a multimedia site-specific installation for the Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim that discusses language in times of loss: loss of memories, of social and political rights or laws. He reflects on the political turmoil in Brazil and the disappearance of large parts of the Amazon rainforest.
SIDE LUIZ
Studio recording of Luiz Monteiro's guitar solo, which developed as an interpretation
of the score on the record's cover. The score was prepared by Lucas Odahara, using
page 61 of the 2005 Vintage Press edition of Toni Morrison's novel Sula, by covering
all of the letters on the page except for A, B, C, D, E, F and G. The remaining charac-
ters, read as musical notes, became the basis for the solo. In addition to these notes,
Luiz interpreted the blank spaces between them as markings of duration and contin-
ued to improvise until the piece, in his words, “sounded right." The improvisations
occurred after discussions of “Something Newly Missing," a phrase that Morrison
employs on page 61 in reference to a character's death. The recording was made in
São Paulo on December 28th, 2019.
SIDE LUCAS

riverbank around the corner from his apartment in Berlin. It was a sunny day, after
